Through the lens of multimedia learning, the dual-code theory and the cognitive load theory proves to be effective in the persuasive manner that Billy Graham approached his TED talk regarding the technology, faith and human shortcomings. The narrator applies the cognitive load theory on the basis that it improves the working memory of the audience listening to his talk. This is because a working memory is finite. It reveals that an overloaded working memory is bound to forget things due to the encoding and long-term storage in mental models. Hence, in Graham TED talk, the cognitive load theory was applied on the basis that humans can learn effectively by not using distracting materials. The stage was simple and directly focused on the narrator. One message per slide would be appropriate in that the presentation should only use information that the learner needs. Nevertheless, Billy’s TED talk displayed the use of a dual-code theory by merging the use of verbal and visual information to represent the right information that needs to be projected. According to Billy’s TED talk, he was able to vary the tone of his voice as he presented. He mainly captivated the audience by pausing at transitional points that clearly indicated when the narrator was moving to another important point that dictates the importance of the presentation.
